The Douro was the first wine region to be formally demarcated and regulated, in 1756. In 2001 the Douro wine region was inscribed as UNESCO world heritage site, being classified as an extensive land of mountainous wine production region that is unique in the world.

The landscape is marked by valleys with vine planted terraces, limited by olive trees and sustained by kilometres of shale walls. The fauna and flora are typically Mediterranean, it is one of the most fascinating architectural masterpieces on the planet. Here you sense man´s strength and the imponent force of nature. This is the patrimony the moves us, an unforgettable scenery composed of Quintas that hold their names on small walls and mark the valley through waves of stone and vine.

A wine boat experience

Starting from the right bank at Ferrão Quay, or from the left bank at Távora Quay, Rivus offers exclusive or pre-determined programmes, always in the heart of the Douro, our poet Miguel Torga referred to the region as the “myocardium” of the Douro. The tour takes us past a few tributary rivers and the main Quintas. These were previously owned by famous people like D. Antónia Ferreira, Baron of Forrester and many other important landowners and Port wine producers.
